1. Cow urine, bleach and cocaine have all been recommended as COVID-19 cures — all guff. The pandemic has been cast as a leaked bioweapon, a byproduct of 5G wireless technology and a political hoax — all poppycock.

코로나19의 세계적인 팬더믹 현상은 온갖 루머로 가득차다. 증거 없는 민간치료제나 음모론으로 혼란을 더 가중시킨다. 이에 대해 저자 Timothy Caulfield는 과학자들이 나서서 강력한 대응을 해야한다고 주장한다. 그는 2가지 접근을 제시한다. 첫번째로, 대학이나 의학센터에서 헬스 유사과학을 용인하거나 정당화하는 것을 그만둬야 한다. 놀랍게도, 오하이오 주에 있는 Cleveland Clinic 같이 권위 있는 기관에서 reiki(기 치료: 손으로 환자 몸을 만지지 않은 채 에너지 흐름을 활용하는 치료)라는 과학적이지 못한 방식으로 면역력을 높이는 방식을 제공하고 있다는 것이다. 이와 같이 유사과학이나 자연 치료를 활용하는 기법은 원래도 많은 비판을 받았지만, 코로나19가 퍼지면서 그런 기법을 마케팅하려는 사람들의 움직임이 더 활발해졌다. 이럴수록 신뢰있는 의료 기관에서 맞춰 싸워야 한다.

두번째로는, 연구자들은 만연한 잘못된 정보에 대해 나서서 싸우는 참여자가 되어야 한다. 물리학자, 미생물학자, 면역학자 등 관련 있는 과학자들의 협동과 적극적인 노력이 필요하다. 물론, 대체 치료나 플라시보의 효과를 검증할만한 자료는 있지만, 그렇다고 증거 없는 기법들로 사람들을 속이면 안된다.
