• Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us - there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. (p.1)

  - a catch in the voice : 강한 감정(strong emotion)으로 말문이 막히는 상황.

• I believe our future depends on how well we know this Cosmos in which we float like a mote of dust in the morning sky.

• The dimensions of the Cosmos are so large that using familiar units of distance, such as meters or miles, chosen for their utility on Earth, would make little sense. Instead, we measure distance with the speed of light. (p.2)

• If we were randomly inserted into the Cosmos, the chance that we would find ourselves on or near a planet would be less than one in a billion trillion trillion. In everyday life such odds are called compelling. Worlds are precious. (p.3)

요약과 감상

우주는 대단히 광활하고 신비롭다. 은하와 그 안에 별들은 무수히 많지만 대부분 비어있다. 이러한 우주에, 생명체가 우리 말고는 없다는 것은 말이 되지 않는다. 우주를 탐험하고 개척할 수 있는 것은 우리 인간이라는 존재가 갖고 있는 상상력과 회의주의 덕분이다. 상상력으로 우리는 도달하지 못하는 세계로 이끌게 되며, 회의감으로 환상과 사실을 구분하고 끊임없이 우리의 추측을 시험하게 한다.

 

Those explorations required skepticism and imagination both. Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were.
But without it, we go nowhere. Skepticism enables us to distinguish fancy from fact, to test our speculations.

 

이 부분이 가장 인상 깊었다. 상상과, 회의 이 두 상반된 태도로 마치 줄다리기 하면서 우주를 탐험하는 것은 우리가 각자 인생을 탐험하는 것과 유사해보였다. 끊임없이 나의 미래를 상상하면서 동시에 현실적인 접점을 찾아가는 것. 그래서 우리가 삶을 '개척한다'라는 표현을 쓰는 것일까? 마치 우주를 개척하는 것처럼 말이다.
